March 13th 2020 marks the day I was told that a show I had designed was being postponed. In the weeks to follow, my other shows also began to be postponed and even worse, cancelled. I was devastated, for over 10 years now I have been working as a Theatre Designer living in London. This was the first time that I was out of work had no idea of when I could go back to doing the thing that I loved the most.
To Keep my mind busy and to focus my energy, I’ve been creating and crafting all that I can from my tiny studio at home. This will be a collection of this that I have designed and hand made myself with the equal love and passion I have when designing and making theatre shows.
To start off with, I present to the world ‘Jean’s Genies’. This was a redesign of a sock toy that I was given by a good friend of mine, when I was studying at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Originally it was something tiny and could fit in the palm of my hand, with small button eyes and filled with sand, sadly it doesn't exist anymore as it perished in a house move.
In the summer of 2019 I had the pleasure of designing a version of a Genie for ‘Titania’ in Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Globe Theatre. The Genie appeared on stage when Titania was being sung to by the fairies when she was falling asleep. Since then the design of the Genies have evolved into what you now see in my collection. Each Genie is individual and bespoke with their own sense of adventures waiting to be had with their new future owners.
